115 FW historian Tech. Sgt. David Anderson traced the history of the wing’s unit patch by explaining the significance of the 176th Fighter Interceptor Group patch worn here in the 1960s and 70s. The two figures are the pilot and radar observer of the F-89 (the pilot is the one with the musket; the RO is the one holding the telescope). Both are dressed in fur, representing Wisconsin’s history of the fur trade. The moon represents the night fighting capabilities of the F-89, and the rockers above and below identify the unit as the 176 FIS and display the unit motto of the time.
