Three days after departing from it's home port in Norfolk, Virginia the USS Iwo Jima (LHD 7) arrives outside the French Quarter of New Orleans to serve as a floating launch pad for amphibious and air operations in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. The Hurricane made landfall near Buras, Louisiana on August 29th 2005 with winds up to 230km/h and by the following day had broken two New Orleans levees covering 80 percent of the city with water from nearby Lake Pontchartrain.
